Have you ever considered applying for a low-commitment part-time job during the semester, but found the retail and Food and Beverage (F&B) industry uninspiring? Perhaps administrative roles feel repetitive and somewhat torturous? Or maybe the typical warehouse packing job is taking a toll on your physical health? Ditch those boring old jobs and consider these niche, flexible, and unique alternatives instead!

Live Streaming Host

If you’re a natural in front of the camera and love sales, this role is tailor-made for you! With the introduction of TikTok Shop and a surge in the popularity of live streaming as a marketing tool, there’s a high demand for live streaming hosts. The best part? No experience is required and some companies even provide commissions when  you hit your sales target! One example of a live streaming host is a try-on model for clothing brands. Don’t worry about not having the proportions of your stereotypical models, as companies seek individuals of various body types to showcase the inclusivity of their clothes. These roles can be easily discovered on job search websites and apps.

Substitute Teacher

Being a substitute teacher might be less glamourous than being a live-streaming host, but it is a  a fantastic opportunity for those passionate about teaching or those seeking to enhance their portfolios. Currently, the Ministry of Education (MOE) offers the Scheme for Relief Educators (SRE). Undergraduate university students, A-level, degree, and diploma holders are eligible to apply for relief teaching roles. University graduates will earn $130 per day, while others will earn $110 for approximately 5.5 hours of work. The schedule is flexible, but will vary depending on school appointments, with a minimum of 2.75 working hours per day. However, it’s important to note that working in an educational institution entails significant responsibility. Applicants must adhere to strict rules regarding grooming and conduct to be considered for this role.

Interacting with others might be daunting, particularly for introverts. But fear not – a pet sitting job might just be the perfect fit! Singapore has several pet sitting websites and apps for you to kickstart your pet sitting journey. Simply sign up, write a brief description of yourself, and upload photos of your own pets or those you’ve cared for previously, and list your services! Bear in mind that your account needs to get approved by the company before you can start pet sitting, so put your best paw forward when creating your profile. From overnight house sitting to dog walking, dog or cat boarding, home visits, and doggy day care, there’s a range of services you can offer. The best part about being a freelancer is that you get to set your own prices and schedule! The only downside? Most companies take a 15% cut of your earnings as a fee but if you’re an animal lover with a furry friend of your own, this gig is right up your alley!

Lion Dancing

Looking for a thrilling and dynamic way to add some spice to your life? Joining a lion dance troupe is a fantastic chance to forge new friendships while staying active. Comprising skilled performers, the troupe typically features two dancers controlling a lion costume, accompanied by fellow members playing traditional instruments like drums, cymbals, and gongs. Joining most lion dance troupes and attending their weekly training sessions is free, with no age, gender, or race restrictions! However, don’t expect a hefty salary when joining a lion dance troupe; it’s mainly for those with a passion for the art. Performers typically receive only a small token sum after each event.

Break free from traditional part-time jobs and step out of your comfort zone with these roles that not only line your pockets but also provide personal fulfilment. Whether it’s the buzz of live streaming, the joy of teaching, pet sitting, or even lion dancing, there are many opportunities for students to make an extra buck. So, if you’re ready to spice up your student life and make the most of your spare time, we highly suggest you consider these unique part-time gigs.
