The gravity of these words didn\u2019t fully hit us until we realised we had to build the foundations of HYPE\u2019s new online home from the ground up: domain name, website layout, article designs and everything in between. And it needed to be special; this was a 25-year-old publication we were handling. With such a crucial task in mind, we rolled up our sleeves and cracked on with it to produce an all-new, revamped HYPE magazine jam-packed with new features!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Our most notable change was HYPE’s merger with npTribune. All campus news is now housed under one roof along with lifestyle and entertainment stories. npTribune is now one of five sections, alongside our People, Places, Perspectives and Lifestyle sections. So best believe we have got everything infotainment covered!<\/span><\/p>\n Just like how voices online are much louder than in person, we at HYPE want to be more than just the voice of youth, we want to hear YOUR voices. That’s why we\u2019ve brought back the Aunt Agony section from the magazines of yesteryear! From emotional dilemmas to stories of heartbreak, and even your take on social issues, now you can send in your questions and we at HYPE will discuss them with you along with an expert opinion on the subject matter. We\u2019re calling this segment HYPEline! (Get it? Helpline? HYPEline?)<\/span><\/p>\n And as if one pun wasn\u2019t enough, our monthly features, just like the one you’re reading now, will be known as HYPElight. (Highlight? HYPElight? You get the gist.) The HYPElight allows the publication to shed light on a central theme by encapsulating the essence of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Given the volatility of the pandemic-ridden world we live in, along with the massive changes to HYPE, we thought it was only fitting for our first theme to be \u2018Metamorphosis\u2019: an abrupt change in life brought about by a force of nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=”#000000″ _builder_version=”4.4.7″ custom_margin=”17px||10px||false|false”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Libre Caslon Text||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”2em” custom_margin=”||-1px|||” locked=”off”] \u201cPeople think it\u2019s easy to publish online. Well, it is and it\u2019s also absolutely not,\u201d said Mr Robin Yee, a senior advisor and lecturer at the School of Film and Media Studies (FMS), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/hypesingapore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/robin-quote-01.png” alt=”playing games separately” title_text=”robin quote-01″ admin_label=”Image” _builder_version=”4.4.7″ custom_margin=”-35px|||||” custom_padding=”0px||||false|false”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Libre Caslon Text||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”2em”] Ms Jacqueline Tan, the director of FMS, felt that \u201cit was a natural progression\u201d. \u201cWe are talking about being environmentally friendly and conserving resources, printing anything on paper is really not utilising our resources well since there is an online platform available to us,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Mr Desmond Kon, 49, an ex-associate lecturer at FMS, poet and author, added on to Ms Tan\u2019s point. \u201cEdits can be made right through. Publication can be rapid-quick. The reach is much greater and farther than any print version could ever dream of. And it\u2019s an eco-friendly choice to boot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Ng Jing Zhi, 23, the editor for HYPE Issue #43 shared the same sentiment. \u201cOne good thing about going online is [future HYPE teams] don\u2019t have to be concerned about finding stories that are relevant half a year from when you start writing it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/hypesingapore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/JingZhi-scaled-e1593955997316.jpg” _builder_version=”4.4.7″][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Montserrat|300|||||||” min_height=”43px” custom_margin=”-20px||26px|||” custom_padding=”0px|||||” locked=”off”] Ng Jing Zhi, 23, was the editor for HYPE Issue #43. Many aspects of print publication had to be left behind and in its place, new challenges arose.<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cThere are also challenging aspects of moving online which print professionals would have to deal with, which is the digital strategy of content,\u201d said Douglas Yong, 26, the deputy editor for HYPE Issue #38.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhen you move online, you have to look at Search Engine Optimization (SEO), how you structure your article [and] what are some of the keywords that you should use in your article,\u201d he elaborated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Mr Paul Ramani, 61, the former advisor for the npTribune team, felt that the experience of working for a publication will be very different for future batches of students.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAll [marketing, advertising and way of writing] will have to change once it goes online, your way of sharing and your way of projecting will also be very different,\u201d the veteran journalist said.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s not to say that one medium is better than the other. You\u2019ve got to be where your audience is \u2014 and for a magazine like HYPE, which is produced by Gen Z-ers for Gen Z-ers, it makes more sense for it to be online.\u201d said Sophie Hong, 28, the art editor for HYPE issue #31.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/hypesingapore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Sophie-Hong-e1593955527812.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.4.7″ custom_margin=”-40px|||||”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Montserrat|300|||||||” min_height=”43px” custom_margin=”-20px||10px|||” custom_padding=”0px|||||” text_font_size_tablet=”” text_font_size_phone=”14px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” locked=”off”] Sophie Hong, 28, was the art editor for HYPE issue #31.<\/span> Photo courtesy of Sophie Hong.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Libre Caslon Text||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”2em”] Despite the advantages of moving online, some elements of the physical copy will definitely be missed.<\/b><\/p>\n Jian Yang Ng, 30, the deputy editor for HYPE Issue #31, said: \u201cI think it will be the lush double-page layouts, I mean it’s just something that you can\u2019t fully replicate in the digital medium. Digital definitely affords its own avenues for creativity when it comes to laying out your content.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut there\u2019s just something about seeing a double pager feature in a hard copy that just does it for me, which again is something we will see less and less of moving forward,\u201d said Jian Yang, currently a corporate communications manager at DHL Asia Pacific and EEMEA, who uses his editorial skills from HYPE in his current job.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/hypesingapore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/HGD-quotes-03.png” title_text=”HGD quotes-03″ _builder_version=”4.4.7″ custom_margin=”-35px||||false|false” custom_padding=”0px|||||”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Libre Caslon Text||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”2em” header_3_font=”Montserrat|600||||||#e02b20|” header_3_text_align=”left” header_3_text_color=”#233956″ header_3_font_size=”24px” header_3_line_height=”1.5em” transform_scale_tablet=”” transform_scale_phone=”” transform_scale_last_edited=”on|desktop” transform_translate=”0px|-34px” transform_translate_tablet=”” transform_translate_phone=”” transform_translate_last_edited=”on|desktop” transform_translate_linked=”off” transform_rotate_tablet=”” transform_rotate_phone=”” transform_rotate_last_edited=”on|desktop” transform_skew_tablet=”” transform_skew_phone=”” transform_skew_last_edited=”on|desktop” transform_origin_tablet=”” transform_origin_phone=”” transform_origin_last_edited=”on|desktop” transform_styles_last_edited=”on|desktop” custom_margin=”12px||27px||false|false” custom_padding=”35px||||false|false” transform_styles_tablet=”” transform_styles_phone=”” locked=”off”] Sophie also agreed that there is something the online version would not be able to replicate.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis is not so much for the reader but for the editor \u2014 nothing beats the feeling of holding the finished product, the culmination of months of blood, sweat and tears in your hands.\u201c said Sophie, the former editor at CLEO who was in charge of revamping their physical magazine and oversaw the transition when CLEO went fully-digital.<\/span><\/p>\n One of the major challenges the HYPE team faced was redesigning the physical magazine to fit the digital landscape. To solve that problem, we collaborated with Designers Of Tomorrow (DOT), a co-curricular activity from the School of Design and Environment in NP.<\/b><\/p>\n On seeing the early prototypes of HYPE, Ms Anita Kuan, the former director of FMS, now deputy principal at Temasek Polytechnic, said: \u201c<\/span>The design of the title is definitely very contemporary, and the ellipses are a nice touch. I like the fact that it\u2019s been created in collaboration with the Design School, partnerships [are] an integral part of innovation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Mr Kon shared her enthusiasm: \u201cLove the clean lines. Very open space that allows design versatility, able to house both serious and light stories. Great promise! It reminded me of the 80s [which was] the period that I grew up in.
