Once he has successfully convinced the population to take action, he will transport back to a thriving, utopian future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ms Sandra Zhang is a shining example of the type of\u00a0 citizen that the campaign is hoping to nurture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ms Sandra, 49, owner of Instagram page <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/monoandco\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@monoandco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an account dedicated to zero waste ideas and plastic alternatives, makes a conscious effort to live sustainably by avoiding wastage and making things last longer. To her, green living can be as simple as reducing food waste, switching to a reusable drinking bottle and refusing single-use shopping bags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Ms Sandra, integrating the 3Rs into your daily activities makes it easier to form sustainable habits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor example, before I leave my house for work, I always bring a drinking bottle and a set of reusable cutlery to avoid generating single-use plastic waste during lunchtime,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention is always better than cure. \u2018Reducing\u2019 is a more efficient method of protecting the environment by simply not wasting its resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we learn how to reuse and recycle unwanted materials, reducing the usage of aforementioned materials will significantly reduce the amount of waste we as consumers generate on a daily basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next term is \u2018Reuse\u2019, which can be accomplished by refusing. When you are taking away lunch or shopping for a new bag, think about what you currently own first. Are there any items that can be reused for the same functionalities as a new item?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, when we can no longer reuse an item, we turn to \u2018Recycling\u2019 it. This last alternative of sorting out trash can be a meticulous process, but it does pay off in the long run in helping to\u00a0 achieve a greener city. To ensure that we live in a cleaner and greener environment, we must inculcate good habits and practice sustainability in our lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore has aspirations that\u00a0 green living will become a norm in our society by meeting\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenplan.gov.sg\/key-focus-areas\/key-targets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key targets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set out in the Singapore Green Plan like expanding\u00a0 nature park lands, reducing amounts of waste and consumption, increasing green energy supply systems, as well as growing food locally .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are all steps taken to strive towards becoming a Zero Waste nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zooming into the Singapore Green Plan 2030, there are the \u201830 by 30\u2019 initiatives, some of which include a 30 per cent reduction of landfill waste, and locally and sustainably producing 30 per cent of our nutritional needs by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local Produce in Singapore<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to produce 30 per cent of our nutritional needs by 2030, the target shines light on the local farming scene in Singapore which produces organically grown food for the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being sustainable does not solely mean practising the 3Rs, it also implies supporting local produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a country that prides itself in its many delicacies, especially chicken rice, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/malaysia-bans-chicken-exports-from-june-1-how-singapore-consumers-businesses-are-coping\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announcing the temporary ban of chicken exports to Singapore in June shocked the entire of Singapore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some stalls resorted to alternatives to live chicken or price hikes to sustain their business, the export ban of chickens from Malaysia has caused<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/consumer\/some-poultry-sellers-may-shut-stalls-when-chicken-exports-halt-from-malaysia-price-hike-expected\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other poultry sellers to temporarily shut down their stalls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In times of a crisis like this, it raises the question: How is Singapore going to effectively combat the potential shortages of food supply in the near future?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore\u2019s limited resources and high dependency on foreign imports of goods<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicken is just one example of the many staple ingredients that are incorporated into many of our local delights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA),<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfa.gov.sg\/food-farming\/singapore-food-supply\/the-food-we-eat#:~:text=Singapore's%20Food%20Supply,-The%20Food%20We&amp;text=With%20little%20farming%20land%2C%20Singapore,13%25%20of%20all%20the%20vegetables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over 90 per cent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the food consumed in Singapore relies on imports from more than 170 countries.
