From a young age, many were taught by their parents as to how to select the best, the freshest, and the most beautiful food. According to the National Environment Agency, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.gov.sg\/docs\/default-source\/media-files\/cos2021\/cos2021-media-factsheet-mandatory-framework-for-food-waste-reporting.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 per cent of local food waste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes from commercial and industrial sectors handling fruits, vegetables and seafood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When more food is wasted, so are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.towardszerowaste.gov.sg\/foodwaste\/#:~:text=When%20food%20is%20wasted%2C%20so,global%20warming%20and%20climate%20change.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to nurture and deliver this food, needlessly adding to our\u00a0 carbon footprint and contributing to climate change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all that being said, is there a way to enjoy delectable food and not contribute so much to food waste?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is yes. I enjoy the interaction with other food rescuers and the friendships which have developed. [We also had] the [eye-opening] experience of what food we have the privilege to rescue, how much potential food waste there really is, as well as the good condition of some of the rescued food,\u201d says Mrs Ng.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whio.com\/news\/local\/upcycling-movement-growing-people-work-decrease-food-waste\/F36IHJZQLBB5JC37RNUSDFTTNI\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upcycled Food Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, food upcycling involves making something new and nutritious out of food that is to be thrown away. In doing so, it reduces food waste.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the best way to learn how to upcycle food is to eat the food first\u2026 . Also, by having a range of upcycled products\u00a0 [created from surplus food] (chips, soaps, drinks), we could showcase creativity and innovation,\u201d says Mr Wong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Wong offers some tips on how Singaporeans and businesses can start their food upcycling journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can get some inspiration or refer to online recipe sites and social media accounts to explore what to do with our surplus ingredients or food scraps,\u201d says Mr Wong. \u201cI think more [businesses] in F&amp;B and even home bakers [and] cooks can explore creating new delights out of old food ingredients. There also needs to be more social media sharing about\u2026 upcycling food.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, it is time Singaporeans change their mindsets about \u2018ugly\u2019 food.
