Whether it was Nirvana\u2019s <\/span>Nevermind<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>Green Day\u2019s <\/span>Dookie<\/span><\/i><\/a> or darker forces such as Nine Inch Nails\u2019 <\/span>The Downward Spiral<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>women in mainstream rock were pretty much unseen, if not nonexistent.<\/span><\/p>\n Relegated to the more underground, niche ranks of the <\/span>riot grrrl<\/span><\/a> genre, female rock musicians rarely enjoyed the popularity of their male contemporaries.<\/span><\/p>\n Much like rock music, anger was also something a woman could never have. An angry woman would have been seen as unattractive, too political and overly aggressive in contrast to the desirable, sexy and submissive stars of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n But one woman sought to do exactly that. Four days after the tragic death of rock legend Kurt Cobain, his widow Courtney Love\u2019s band, Hole<\/span>, <\/span><\/i>released their rage-filled second album, <\/span>Live Through This, <\/span><\/i>to critical acclaim.<\/span><\/p>\n The album scored a rating of 10 on <\/span>Pitchfork<\/span><\/a>, joining 138 other releases with the same rating. With tracks like \u2018Plump\u2019 and \u2018Asking For It\u2019, <\/i>it\u2019s obvious that the album\u2019s themes revolve around womanhood and its woes.
