Due to Covid-19 regulations, <\/span>Pink Dot 13<\/span><\/a> 2021 was a livestream event that included many Singaporean LGBT icons and allies. This organisation encourages all Singaporeans to raise awareness on LGBTQ+ issues in Singapore and acts as a protest to repeal Section 377A.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Sidebar: Section 377A of the Penal Code criminalises consensual sex between men. In March 2020, three LGBTQ+ allies filed <\/span>separate legal challenges<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 against Section 377A. Some of the arguments presented were that the current Section 377A was introduced in order to curb male prostitution, thus making the purpose now \u201cuncertain or obscure\u201d, whereas another argued that Section 377A simply expresses \u2018good, old-fashioned discrimination\u2019 against those in the community for something they cannot wilfully change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n With many established organisations in order to help minorities such as the LGBTQ+ community in Singapore, how safe do Singaporeans in the community really feel?<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Montserrat||||||||” text_font_size=”20px” text_line_height=”1.4em” header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”Raleway|700|||||||” header_2_font_size=”50px” header_2_line_height=”1.4em” header_5_font=”Montserrat||||||||” header_5_text_color=”#b3b3b3″ header_5_font_size=”14px” header_5_line_height=”0.5em” header_6_font=”Raleway|700||on|||||” header_6_font_size=”16px” header_6_letter_spacing=”5px” header_6_line_height=”1.8em” max_width=”659px” module_alignment=”center” custom_margin=”0px|79px|17px||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”-27px|79px|12px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”0px|0px|16px|||” header_2_font_size_tablet=”35px” header_2_font_size_phone=”25px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” locked=”off”] Transgender student denied therapy<\/strong><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.7″ text_font=”Libre Caslon Text||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”2em” custom_margin=”-19px||-1px|||” locked=”off” custom_padding=”||21px|||”] In March 2020, a transgender student posted on Reddit about how the Ministry of Education (MOE) interefered with her hormonal therapy. Before the incident, she had been diagnosed with <\/span>gender dysphoria<\/span><\/a> and decided to undergo hormone therapy after informing MOE and her school administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0However, the request was suddenly blocked after the intervention and she was forced to cut her hair to a boys\u2019 hairstyle and wear the boys\u2019 uniform. Many of his accessories are subtle as they do not explicitly show the rainbow flag or a telltale title, but titles such as \u201cbicycle\u201d for a pin with the bisexual flag. Some organisations include \u2018<\/span>The T Project<\/span><\/a> \u2019, which provides shelter to transgender people, and also to the <\/span>Covid-19 Relief Fund<\/span><\/a> for LGBTQ+ persons\u00a0 .\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Despite these improvements, Singaporeans cannot run from the conservative stereotype as Asians. This is due to the teachings of many religions that homosexuality is wrong, some of which have been lost in translation. Thus, these teachings have been used as a reason to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community.<\/span><\/p>\n For our society to become more accepting, we have to be open about how these sexualities are not something people are able to control. More young Singaporeans, both activists and those in the community, should step up to spread awareness of the discrimination the LGBTQ+ community faces. However, in the long run, the government needs to be able to step up and put in place more laws to protect the basic rights of the community.<\/span><\/p>\n In a progressive society, many Singaporeans are very open to wanting communities such as the LGBTQ+ community to feel included and safe, but it is also no surprise that there is a conservative stereotype among the older generation of Asians.
