According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imh.com.sg\/wellness\/page.aspx?id=356\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IMH), \u201cmental health is about how we think, feel and act as we cope with our lives. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having poor mental health does not necessarily mean that one has a mental illness. As quoted from IMH, \u201cgood mental health isn\u2019t just the absence of mental health problems\u2026 Rather than the absence of mental illness, mental and emotional health refers to the presence of positive characteristics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The causes of mental illnesses and poor mental health range far and wide, but the more common reasons include stress, abuse, trauma, grief, and dysfunctional parenting or families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In retrospect, Singapore has definitely come a long way in regards to discussing topics like mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was once seen as a taboo topic is now being widely addressed by important stakeholders in the country, with many organisations spearheading mental health care initiatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was especially so when Covid-19 first hit Singapore and when it started to have a toll on the mental health of many Singaporeans. Learn more from our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hypesingapore.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/01\/youths-mental-health-vs-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on how Covid-19 impacted the mental health of youths and why it is prevalent in Singapore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government understood this issue and formed a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/health\/task-force-to-tackle-mental-health-needs-amid-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inter-agency task force<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to manage the mental health needs of Singaporeans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another initiative, that was not a consequential result of Covid-19, would include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidentschallenge.gov.sg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The President\u2019s Challenge\u2019 Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The initiative is a community effort that allowed over $13 million to be raised for more than 60 agencies. This was to support the agencies in helping those with mental health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, despite the plethora of measures put in place by Singapore, it is definitely still not enough when compared to other developed countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moh.gov.sg\/news-highlights\/details\/manpower-for-patients-receiving-psychiatric-treatment-and-mental-health-support\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministry of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019, the ratio of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychiatrists-to-population in Singapore per 100K people is 4.4 and the ratio of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychologists-to-population is 8.3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-tjp.org\/article.asp?issn=1028-3684;year=2019;volume=33;issue=1;spage=6;epage=12;aulast=Kua\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">journal done by the Department of Psychological Medicine <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the Taiwanese Journal of Psychiatry, countries like the USA, UK and Australia have a psychiatrists-to-population ratio of 13.7, 11.0, and 14.0 respectively.<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/hypesingapore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/symptomsfinalupdate.png&#8221; It was also found that as of 2019, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homage.sg\/health\/mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the top five mental disorders are depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and substance abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With mental health gaining more awareness in the recent decade, more are also seeking professional help for their mental health. As quoted from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/singapore\/in-focus-young-people-mental-health-singapore-treatment-13002934\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNA article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201caccording to MOH, from 2017 to 2019, an average of 12,600 patients aged 15 to 34 years sought treatment for mental health conditions at public hospitals each year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.org.sg\/learn-about-suicide\/quick-facts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.org.sg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samaritians of Singapore (SOS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that youths aged between 18 to 34 years old were also found to be the most vulnerable group for mental disorders, and suicide continues to be the leading cause for death for those between the ages of 10 to 29 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To some, it might not make sense why those suffering from mental disorders do not seek help from professionals. If one had a physical illness, the next logical step would be to see a doctor. However, it is not so easy to tell when someone is suffering from mental <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illness as it cannot be \u201cseen\u201d, in the literal sense of the word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI realised how much I depend on how others perceive me to determine my self-worth, and that without it, I didn\u2019t value myself. As a person that tends to suppress her feelings a lot, she found it difficult to let go.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn Singapore&#8230; therapy is still not a common resort. Furthermore, [with] me being a student, it is even more unusual. I was worried people would view me as I was sick or scared to be around me,\u201d says Tian as she explains how she was worried about the stigma of seeking therapy as well as how she overcame it. \u201cThen I realised that people won\u2019t really know I go to therapy unless I tell them and people I love would be understanding and still accept me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some may think Tian is exaggerating, but according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/10\/e016432\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study done by the Research Division<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) on the stigma among Singaporean youth, nearly half of the participants associated pejorative words and phrases such as \u2018mental illness\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12888-020-02823-6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study done by BMC Psychiatry in 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also revealed that there was a trend in the number of people expressing fear towards people with mental illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think there is such a heavy stigma associated [with] people struggling with mental health <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Singapore \u2026 when really we should accept it as the norm \u2026 and not be resistant to it,\u201d says Nancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many may also tend to stray away from seeing help from public sectors because of the misconception that if they do seek help from therapists, their case information may affect any future opportunities that they receive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn terms of the code of ethics, we must still maintain a high level of confidentiality for the clients,\u201d said Mr Carlin Lee<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 39, one of the seven counsellors at Ngee Ann Polytechnic Counselling &amp; Care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a therapist from the public sector himself, Mr Lee does agree that the case details will be recorded. However, he explains how these case details are so that the case can be followed up by another therapist in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor example, if a student comes and sees me, the record doesn&#8217;t go to their school, it doesn&#8217;t go to their teachers, unless they give permission,\u201d explained Mr Lee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, he mentioned how \u201cafter a few years, the information will be purged, which is a normal process in terms of dealing with confidential information\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many may still have the fear of seeking help because they are afraid it would affect their work-life and job opportunities. I expected to gain new insight and perspective, that I\u2019d feel settled, accept my situation and move on. That did happen for the most part but it only solved one of my problems,\u201d says Tian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the prices between private and public therapy differ greatly, and it all boils down to what you are willing to pay for. With private therapy, you are paying for their time and service, and how much you are willing to pay for is exactly what you will be receiving in return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the public sector of therapists, many seek help from them due to the lower costs, and so, sessions are few and far between.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause [public sector therapy] is cheaper or free, people tend to use public sector services as well. The fight against the stigma requires long-term, consistent effort from both the public and the government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the plus side, the government seems to understand the need to normalise and destigmatise mental health and has launched more mental wellness initiatives, especially in schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Education (MOE) will be refreshing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moe.gov.sg\/microsites\/cos2020\/refreshing-our-curriculum\/cce2021.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Character and Citizenship Education (CCE)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> curriculum for 2021, and will be introducing mental wellness as part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/singapore\/schools-mental-health-lessons-2021-more-trips-asia-moe-12499088\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new CCE curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in secondary schools in order to educate students on how to identify symptoms of poor mental health and how to practice empathy towards others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Efforts must also be made by the public to practice empathy towards those who are courageous enough to seek help instead of judging or questioning them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the cost, the obvious way to get around that issue is by seeking help from therapists from the public sector.
